Do you know Avonmore and its history?

The Avonmore Community League has put together a set of questions about Avonmore and its history. Read each of the questions below and figure out where in the community the question is referring to. Then put on your snowboots and go take a picture at the location (you do not have to be in the picture if you do not want to). If you’re stuck, email or phone a senior community member, or ask one you meet on a walk (from a distance…).

The deadline for submissions of your answers along with your pictures is December 18, 2020. We will randomly draw a name out of those entries with the correct answers and they will win TIm Hortons gift cards. Answers will be posted in the next issue of SE Voice. Submit your answers along with your pictures to events@avonmore.org.

  1. These hallowed halls used to be the home to a pig farm, but now the squeals come from children (and some adults). Take a picture at the sign in front of this location.
  2. At one time, the Avonmore community league sponsored an annual ice carnival. This was held near the old small playground, where there is a great view and access to water. Take a picture at this location, on the feature that is there now.
  3. The paved walking path in Mill Creek Ravine was once the rail bed for which grandly-named railway? One of the bridges has a historical marker plaque about the railway. Take a photo of the plaque (Hint. It might be just outside of the Avonmore Community Boundary)
  4. If your toddlers wanted to ride a train just their size, where would you go?
  5. Avonmore has a great little community garden, located on the front lawn of a resident of Avonmore. Take a picture near the garden boxes.
  6. Did you know we have a wonderful little free library in our neighbourhood, created by a resident. It is also used to be the home of a large market garden. Take a picture at the location. Maybe you will find a good book to read, or drop off a book that you would like to donate to the library.
  7. This building keeps our creek clean
  8. Find the little park named ‘Wally’.
  9. Who (in Avonmore) framed Connor McDavid?
  10. There is only 1 red Canada Post mailbox left in Avonmore. Take photos with enough background to show the location of it (Hint: it is near the heart of our community)
